VaHi Safety Team Report Weeks 53 (12/25/16 – 12/31/16)

News and Notes

Delay in Reports

Yes. I know. There are only 52 weeks in a year. However, week one ended on January 2, 2016, so it just made sense to include the data for this one week 12/25/16 – 12/31/16 in the 2016 statistics. That made for 53 weeks this year.

Also, you may be wondering why you have seen so few reports in 2017. As we all know, Atlanta Police Department is significantly understaffed and struggling to retain officers who are being recruited to other departments. While the authorized force is 2000 strong, reports indicate that the actual number of active officers is closer to 1800. In a situation of limited resources, 911 calls will always be prioritized over preparing statistical reports for the community – as they should be.

Please keep the need for more officers, and the need for a pay and benefit package that will retain officers, in mind when you go to the polls to elect a new Mayor and City Council in the fall.

Street Captain Meeting Summary

By now you should have seen the summary of our excellent street captain meeting held on March 4th. We learned about the new body cameras being issued to our Zone 6 officers as well as information about both residential, business owned, and city owned surveillance cameras. If you missed it, find the recap here. https://vahi.org/police-reveal-cool-camera-features-at-vhca-safety-meeting/

CourtWatch Training Set for Saturday April 1st Postponed

The annual CourtWatch training session originally scheduled for April 1, 2017 has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts of participants. When a new date is set we will make announcements in the safety report and all other neighborhood communication channels.

City of Atlanta Resident Satisfaction Survey

The Mayor’s Office of Innovation and Performance is conducting a survey to gather feedback on how to improve city services. There are several questions related to the Atlanta Police Department, so please take a few minutes and weigh in on important safety topics.

Responses are anonymous and will be used during the budget process to help inform decisions and investment in areas such as transportation, public safety, youth development, economic development and government efficiency. The survey is open now and through Monday April 10th. To participate click here. https://www.feedback.infosurv.com/se/4D441EF04A73AEC4?pac=gov

Crime Statistics

The following information is taken from our APD Zone 6 report (http://atlantapd.org/Zone6.aspx).
It includes information from the Virginia-Highland Beat 601 reported incidents along with relevant reports from other nearby beats. Keep in mind that not all incidents are reported. A map showing the location of beats 601 – 612 within Zone 6 can be found at this link http://boundaries.atlantapd.org/Map-Zone6-Beats.aspx. This information is not shared to scare anyone, but to let you know what happens around us every day so you can be alert and aware.

Vehicles were entered on Maiden Lane and on N. Highland Ave in front of Taco Mac. Thieves made off with a laptop, and credit cards from the vehicle on Maiden Lane.

The mystery explained!
Sadly, in the Taco Mac incident the owners had just completed a charity event raising funds for Make a Wish. They lost costly Darth Vader and Storm Troopers costumes. The good news is that funds were raised and the costumes are being replace. In fact, this same group (501st Legion) will participate in our Summerfest Parade on Friday June 2nd, so come out and show them some love at the parade and community dinner.

Other Larcenies None in Beat 601 and Twelve in Zone 6.

Auto Theft Two in Beat 601 and fifteen in Zone 6.

On December 27th, a white 2007 Ford truck was stolen from the 700 block of Amsterdam Avenue. The truck was involved in a hit and run and the vehicle was followed by a witness. It was abandoned and police were able to recover the vehicle and obtained prints and a good description of the suspects and the vehicle they left in – a blue/grey Crown Victoria.

On December 30th, a 2010 Silver Toyota was stolen from the 700 block of Elkmont Dr.
