1/24/2020 Pedestrian Robbery 609 Virginia Av
On 01/24/2020, I Officer Hines was dispatched to a pedestrian robbery call that occurred in the 600 block of Virginia Ave NE in front of the Virginia Highland Apartments. The victims ran from that location to the corner of Virginia Ave NE at Ponce De Leon Pl NE and this is where I met them. There were 4 victims total. They all advised that they walked from their school, "Inman Middle" to the Starbucks at 931 Monroe Dr NE. They advised that they were walking back eastbound on Virginia Ave NE in front of the "Virginia Highland Apartments" and a male walked up to them with a Black Handgun at his side and told them "Put Your Phones on the ground!" The kids then advised that after they put their phones on the ground he said, "Now Run!" They said then ran and called the Police from a friend’s phone. They said that the Unknown male took off on foot westbound towards Monroe Dr NE. additional units were advised as well as the robbery unit. The air unit "Phoenix" was also raised and canvassed Piedmont Park and surrounding areas. Officers assisted with canvassing the area for the suspect as well as nearby homes and businesses for cameras. The children advised that their phones were off so they couldn’t be tracked at the moment. There were no serial numbers available, but the parents will be finding that information and providing it at a later date. There is a camera at 600 Virginia Ave NE at the "REMAX" across the street from the incident’s location. Those cameras are owned by the Extra Space Storage (404-874-7410) located in the rear of the building.
If you see someone or something suspicious, please report it to the police. When driving or out walking keep an eye out in the neighborhood. What you see and report just might prevent a crime.
